This guide walks you through how to set up and manage custom metrics in TrueProfit. Instead of relying only on fixed default metrics, you now can flexibly define the ones that matter most and save your own calculations as custom metrics on your dashboard, powered by your store’s data.
Whether it’s Contribution Margin, marketing efficiency, or %COGS of Total Sales, Custom Metrics turn those calculations into live, trackable metrics—so your dashboard stays aligned with your goals.

What are custom metrics?
Custom metrics allow you to define your own formulas so you can track the metrics that matter most to your business and keep your reports accurate.
You create them using a combination of:
Built-in metrics in our system
For example:Net Profit,Revenue,Total Ad Spend.
Type@in the formula field to search and insert any existing built-in metric.Mathematical operators
+(addition)-(subtraction)*(multiplication)/(division)( )Parentheses to control the order of the calculation
Once a custom metric is created, it can be used in your reports or dashboards just like any built-in metric.
How to build a custom metric?
Follow the steps below to create a custom metric.
1. From the Dashboards, click on the three dots in the top right corner
This opens the dashboard options menu.
2. Click “Create custom metric”
A modal (popup) will open that allows you to create your custom metric.
3. Give your custom metric a name
Enter a clear, short name.
Important: The name must be different from any built-in metric name such as Net Profit, Revenue, etc.
4. Define the Formula:
In the formula field:
Type
@to refer to a built-in metric, then select it from the list.Use operators to build your formula:
+addition-subtraction*multiplication/division( )parentheses to group parts of your formula
Example:
Net Sales = Total Sales - Return - Taxes
5. Select a format for the metric:
Select how the result should be displayed:
Percentage (%): use this for metrics that represent a share or ratio of something.
Example 1: %COGS of Total Sales = Total COGS / Revenue
Example 2: Ad Spend / Revenue where the result represents “what % of revenue is ad spend”.
Currency ($): use this for metrics that represent money.
Example: Net Sales = Total Sales - Return - Taxes
Number: use this for metrics that should appear as a plain number (counts, indexes, or ratios without % or currency).
Example: LTGP:CAC = (Gross Profit / Total Customers) / CAC
6. Validate the formula
The builder will automatically check if your formula is valid.
If there is an error, you will NOT see the green “Valid” message.
If the formula is valid, the Preview section will show the value of your newly created metric for the past 30 days.
7. Click “Create and add to dashboard”
The custom metric will be created.
It will be automatically pinned on the dashboard as a new card.
8. Edit and delete
To edit or delete a custom metric:
On the dashboard, find the custom metric card.
Click the three dots (…) next to the metric.
Choose Edit to update it, or Delete to remove it.
Example Custom Metric
Let’s build the COGS percentage of total sales metric.
On the dashboard, click the three dots (…) in the top right corner.
Click “Create custom metric”.
Name the custom metric:
%COGS of Total Sales.Input formula:
Use
@to find built-in metrics in the app.Formula:
Total COGS / Revenue(Alternatively:
Total COGS / Gross Sales, depending on how you define sales in your reports.)
Select format: choose Percentage (%).
Click “Create and add to dashboard”.
The COGS percentage of total sales metric will now be available as a card on your dashboard.
Limitations
Custom metrics are not available in the All Stores view.
Custom metrics are not available in the mobile experience.
You cannot include other custom metrics inside a new custom metric: At this time, you can only build formulas using base metrics (built-in metrics), not previously created custom metrics.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Can I name my custom metric the same as a built-in metric?
No. Custom metrics must have a unique name that does not match any built-in metric (such as Net Profit, Revenue, etc.).
2. Can I use one custom metric inside another custom metric?
No. Currently, custom metric formulas can only use built-in metrics. You cannot reference custom metrics inside other custom metrics.
3. Why do I need to choose a format (%, $, Number)?
The format controls how the result is displayed:
Use % for share/rate metrics.
Use $ for values in money.
Use Number for plain counts or ratios like MER or LTGP:CAC.
4. My formula shows an error and is not “Valid”. What should I check?
Make sure all metric names are selected via
@(not typed with spelling mistakes).Check that all parentheses are closed.
Ensure you are only using allowed operators:
+,-,*,/,( )Make sure you are not referencing another custom metric.
5. Where will I see my new custom metric after I create it?
It will appear as a pinned card on the dashboard from which you created it.
