Dashboard Metrics Glossary

This article provides the definitions, formulas, and explanations behind each metric on TrueProfit's Dashboard. Use Ctrl+F to quickly find the term you're looking for.

1. General

Net Profit

Net Profit is the profit you keep after deducting all costs.

Net Profit = Revenue + Tips + Gift Card Sales − Total Costs (if Taxes Collected is excluded)

Net Profit = Revenue + Tips + Gift Card Sales − Taxes Collected − Total Costs (if Taxes Collected is included)


Whether Taxes Collected is included depends on your Calculation Preferences.

Revenue

Revenue is the total amount you earn from orders. It includes taxes and shipping fees that you charge your customers, and excludes discounts and returns.

It is equivalent to Total sales in Shopify.

Revenue = Gross Sales – Discounts – Returns + Taxes Collected + Shipping Charged

Total Costs

Total Costs are the sum of all expenses

Total Cost = Cost of Goods Sold + Handling Fees + Shipping Costs + Ad Spend + Transaction Fees + Custom Costs (Taxes Paid is included in Custom Costs)

  • See which costs impact your profit the most

Orders

Orders are the total number of orders placed

Units Sold

Units Sold are the total number of product units sold across all orders

Net Profit Margin

Net Profit Margin is the percentage of your revenue that remains as profit after all costs.

For example, a 20% margin means you keep $20 profit for every $100 in revenue.

Net Profit Margin = [ Net Profit / Revenue ] * 100

Helps you:

  • Understand how much money you actually keep after all costs.

  • Use this to decide if your business model is sustainable.

High: You keep a good amount of profit → Safer to scale your business

Low: Most of your revenue is eaten by costs → Hard to grow profitably

Gross Sales

Gross Sales is the total sales value before subtracting any deductions:

Gross Profit

Gross Profit is the profit you make after subtracting product costs and direct order costs from your sales.

Gross Profit = Revenue + Tips + Gift Card Sales - COGS - Shipping Costs - Transaction Fees - Handling Fees

Helps you:

  • See how much profit you keep from each order after product and order costs

  • See if your pricing covers your direct costs. If Gross Profit is negative, the order costs more than what you earned

Gross Profit Margin

Gross Profit Margin is the percentage of your revenue that remains after subtracting product costs and direct order costs.

For example, a 50% margin means you keep $50 profit for every $100 in revenue.

Gross Profit Margin = [ Gross Profit / Revenue ] * 100

Helps you:

  • See how much revenue remains after product and order costs

  • Check if your pricing covers your costs

High: Good pricing and cost control → more room to grow

Low: Costs too high or pricing too low → review pricing or suppliers

Discounts

Discounts are the total amount reduced from your orders through discount codes or promotions.

2. Cost

Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) is the direct cost to produce or acquire the products you sell. See how to set up COGS in the app

COGS = (Cost per unit × Units sold) − Cost of returned units

Cancelled orders that were never fulfilled are excluded
For bundle products, The bundle cost setup applies

Handling Fees

Handling Fees are the costs to prepare orders for shipping, including boxing and packaging.

Total Ad Spend

Total Ad Spend is the total amount you spent on advertising across all channels.

Shipping Costs

Shipping Costs are the costs you pay to deliver orders to customers. See how to set up shipping costs in the app

Custom Costs

Custom Costs are additional expenses that are not automatically tracked. Examples include software fees, influencer payments, rent, staff salaries, or agency fees. Set up Custom Costs

Transaction Fees

Transaction Fees are the fees charged by payment providers (such as PayPal or Stripe) and Shopify fees for third-party payments for each order. Learn more

3. Order Summary

Average Order Value (AOV)

Average Order Value (AOV) is the average amount customers spend per order.

Average Order Value = Revenue / Total Orders

Helps you:

  • See how much customers spend per order.

  • Use this to find ways to increase revenue per order (bundles, upsells).

High: Customers spend more per order → Higher revenue and profit

Low: Customers spend less → Consider pricing, bundles, or upsells

Average Order Cost

Average Order Cost is the average total cost for each order.

Average Order Cost = Total Costs / Total Orders

Helps you:

  • See how much each order costs you.

  • Use this to control costs and protect your profit margin.

High: Costs are increasing → Profit is reduced

Low: Costs are well controlled → Better margins

Average Order Profit

Average Order Profit is the average profit you earn from each order.

Average Order Profit = Net Profit / Total Orders

Helps you:

  • See how much profit you earn per order.

  • Use this to decide if your orders are profitable and scalable.

High: Strong profit per order → You can scale orders

Low: Weak profit → Review pricing or reduce costs

Ad Spend Per Order

The average amount you spend on ads for each order.

Ad Spend Per Order = Total Ad Spend / Total Orders

Helps you:

  • See how much you spend on ads to get one order.

  • Compare this with profit per order to check profitability.

High: You spend too much to acquire an order → Risk of losing profit

Low: Efficient ad spend → Better profitability

Purchase Frequency

Purchase Frequency is the average number of orders each customer makes in a period.

Purchase Frequency = Total Orders / Total Unique Customers

Helps you:

  • See how often customers buy from you.

  • Use this to evaluate customer loyalty and retention.

High: Customers buy more often → Strong retention

Low: Customers rarely return → Improve retention strategies

4. Customer Summary

Total Customers

Total Customers is the number of unique customers who placed at least one order, including both new and returning customers.

Total Customers = Total New Customers + Total Returning Customers

New Customers

New Customers are customers who placed their first order with your store

Repurchase Rate

Repurchase Rate is the percentage of customers who have bought from your store before and purchased again.

Repurchase Rate = [Number of Repeat Customers / Total Customers] * 100A repeat customer is someone who has placed 2 or more paid orders.

Low: Customers don't return often → You rely more on new customer acquisition

CAC

Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) is the average amount you spend on ads to get one new customer.

Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) = Total Ad Spend / Number of New Customers

Helps you:

  • See how much it costs to acquire a new customer.

  • Compare this with customer value (LTV) to evaluate sustainability.

High: Expensive to acquire customers → Hard to stay profitable

Low: Efficient acquisition → Easier to scale

5. Others

Shipping Charged

Shipping Charged is the fee you charge customers for delivery. This is income, not a cost.

Taxes Collected

Taxes Collected are the taxes you charge customers at checkout.

Tips

Tips are optional amounts that customers add to their orders at checkout.

Gift Card Sales

Gift Card Sales are the total value of gift cards you sell to customers.

Note: Gift card sales are not product revenue yet. Revenue is recognized when customers use the gift card.

Returns

Returns are the total value of orders or products that customers return and get refunded.

6. Total Ad Spend

Blended ROAS

Blended ROAS is the total amount of revenue you earn for every dollar spent on ads across all channels.

Blended ROAS = Revenue / Total Ad Spend

Helps you:

  • Check if your total ad spend is driving revenue overall.

- High: Ads are driving strong revenue. You can consider increasing the budget

- Low: Ads are not generating enough revenue. Review targeting, creatives, or reduce spend

Total Ad ROAS

Total Ad ROAS is the overall return on ad spend across all paid channels, based on revenue reported by ad platforms.

Total Ad ROAS = Total Ad Revenue / Total Ad Spend

Helps you:

  • Evaluate ad performance across all paid channels based on ad platform data.

High: Platforms report strong performance → Campaigns look effective

Low: Platforms report weak performance → Optimize campaigns or shift budget

Total Ad Revenue

The total revenue from purchases driven by your ads across all connected platforms.

Helps you:

  • See how much revenue your ads generate based on platform tracking.

High: Ads are driving significant conversions (based on platform data)

Low: Ads are not generating enough conversions → Review campaigns

POAS

Profit on Ad Spend (POAS) is the profit you earn for every dollar spent on ads.

Net Profit / Total Ad Spend

Helps you:

  • Measure whether your ads are actually profitable after all costs.

  • Use this to decide if you should scale or stop ad campaigns.

POAS > 1 → Profitable. You can scale ads

POAS < 1 → Losing money. Reduce spend or optimize costs

ncROAS

New Customer ROAS is the revenue from new customers for every dollar spent on ads.

Return on Ad Spend from New Customers (ncROAS) = New Customers Revenue / Total Ad Spend

Helps you:

  • Measure how effectively your ads acquire new customers.

High: Ads are effective at bringing new customers → Good for growth

Low: Ads rely more on returning customers → Weak acquisition

7. Facebook Ads Metrics

Facebook Ad Spend

Facebook Ad Spend is the total amount you spend on Facebook ads
